Signed copies, Blackheath Village & environs by Neil Rhind is very much a local project. It's author has lived in the South-East London suburb for most of his life and these three very comprehensively written and illustrated books were published by a local bookshop. They record the great estates that once owned what has become a crowded and fashionable suburb. Local customs discussed in detail include 19th century walkathons in which competitors officially called Blackheath Pedestrians managed to walk 1,000 miles in 1,000 hours amid vast crowds. When Rhind was writing the first of these three books in the 1970's he realised that one would not be enough. The second village volume appeared in 1983 and the third (not included in this set) in 2021. The third book in this set covers the open Heath, and was issued by Rhind as a seperate companion volume in 1987. These three books are all signed by the author, and the earliest is dated and dedicated to a local resident.
