A complete first edition set of Joy Adamson's trilogy describing the pioneering conservation project, organised by herself and her husband George, involving three generations of lions in Kenya's Serengeti in the late 1950s/early 1960s. All published by Collins & Harvill Press, London with illustrated cloth boards measuring 17.5cm x 25cm and map endpapers to the second and third volumes. The three volume set weighs 2.5 kg. Born Free: A Lioness of Two Worlds (1960; first impression). 160 pp., including extracts from George Adamson's Letters, a Preface by Lord William Percy and a Foreword by Captain Charles Pitman. 82 black and white photographs. James Hill's 1966 Oscar-winning movie 'Born Free' was based on this work. Living Free: The Story of Elsa and her Cubs (1961; fourth impression). 146 pp., including an introduction by Sir Julian Huxley and an appendix. 10 colour and numerous black and white photographs. Forever Free: Elsa's Pride (1962; first impression). 192 pp., including 8 colour and numerous black and white photographs. All the volumes are in very good condition. The original dust jackets are missing, however the hard covers are intact and free of shelf, edge and corner wear and bumping with the exception of some darkening on the spines and some edges. The binding is very firm. The pages are very clean. They show only very light tanning and there are no tears, repairs, stains, foxing, tears or creases. There are no inscriptions or notations.
