Boyes Stores: The Story of a Family. By Peter Boyes. 1981. 118pp. Pbk. This book, a story of a family-run business started in Scarborough in 1881 by William Boyes at the age of 22, was brought out as a celebration of the centenary of Boyes Stores. Scarborough was the original location of the company and figures frequently in the narrative. Following the Second World War, the company expanded to numerous other locations, mostly on the east coast of England. This is a fascinating, and comprehensive, history of a retail company from small enterprise to a major concern with photographs throughout. These are of the locations of the stores and their staff. The photos are both in black and white and colour. The author was the chairman of the company at the time of publication. The book is in very good condition with just some light scuffing to the covers and slight tanning to the pages. Clean throughout and tightly bound with no former owner inscriptions.
