Brownsea Island
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
A monograph, beautifully illustrated with tissue-protected watercolours by Florence van Raalte of the island in its heyday, early 1900s. The book offers e.g. geological information, history, the problems with the pottery established there in the 1850s, the fire that gutted the castle, and a list of the birds that have been seen on or near Brownsea, and fish caught off it. The volume has red cloth-covered, bevelled boards, with gilt boxing and lettering, rather faded on the spine. The edges show some wear, especially at the top and bottom of the spine, with a 80 mm tear on the spine; there is some slight soiling of the boards. Endpapers have some browning, and the inked name of a previous owner. The binding is holding, although the guttering is cracked in several places. Foxing appears minor, and can be found mainly upon page edges. For its age it's in good condition.
