Canaletto & England

Antonio Canal or Canaletto, known already as "the famous painter of Views of Venice," arrived in London in 1746, where he rapidly found an aristocratic clientele eager to see his brilliantly successful view-painting formula applied to their own city and country estates. For the first time this exhibition and catalog collect and study as a whole Canaletto's pictures and drawings of eighteenth-century England, which were created over a stay that lasted some nine years. Many of these works are relatively unknown because still privately owned by the descendants of the patrons who first commissioned them. The first half of this book assesses Canaletto's career in England, following the changes in his style and subject matter as he adapted his art in response to English taste. Only in one work does he seem to have registered a true image of English weather, but he more than once attempted English genres such as the 'country house portrait' and devised capricci on an English theme. The second half of the book, no less importantly, illustrates Canaletto's influence on the developing school of English landscape painters, from imitators such as Scott and Marlow to watercolorists like Sandby and finally to major figures of the romantic movement such as Girtin, Constable and Turner. A fascinating selection of later 18th-century and early 19th-century English landscape reveals the different ways in which this perhaps rather aloof Venetian immigrant revitalized the English tradition of topographical picture-making.
