Quarter bound in green leather with gilt title and date 1863 on spine. Boards covered with paper marbled in green, black and yellow. Endpapers have multicoloured marbling with feather pattern. Covers bumped and rubbed at corners, up to 8mm chips on top and bottom edges. Spine rubbed along edges but sound. Coloured ribbon bookmark still attached. Block gilt on top edge. Bookseller's details on paper glued to front flyleaf. Full title: Catalogue des gentilshommes de Lorraine et du Duche de Bar qui ont pris part ou envoye leur procuration aux assemblees de la noblesse pour l'election des deputes aux Etats generaux de 1789. Publie, d'apres les proces-verbaux officiels, par Louis de La Roque et Edouard de Barthelemy. Parts I and II. The first section lists the noblemen (and women) eligible to send representatives to the Etats generaux in 1789, on the last occasion when it was summoned before the French revolution, compiled from original documents. These are subdivided by Bailliages (bailiwicks), then listed alphabetically by family name. The second section continues this listing, and also gives the names of military and civil officials, such as the officials of the Parlements at Metz and Nancy. Finally, it lists the members of 'chapitres nobles' (noble confraternities) for men and women attached to different religious institutions, and the conditions of entry for each. The requirement for nine generations or more of noble descent to enter a religious organisation reveals as nothing else could the closed nature of French Ancien regime society. A rare glimpse of French history. Scarce in this binding.
