Charles Gounod: Cinq-mars
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Published by Alfred de Vigny in 1826, Cinq-Mars is considered the first great French historical novel. The action takes place in the 17th century: the Marquis de Cinq-Mars wins the esteem of King Louis XIII by organizing an opposition movement to Cardinal Richelieu. But manipulations, betrayals and conspiracies forced the monarch to abandon his defender and allowed Richelieu to triumph and condemn Cinq-Mars and his friend De Thou to death. It was at the request of the director of the Opera-Comique - Leon Carvalho -, seduced by the idea of an operatic transposition of the novel, that Gounod agreed to return to the front of the opera scene in 1877, after ten years of absence. He delivers a work that denies nothing of the musical seductions of Romeo and Juliet or Faust, but looks very clearly towards the side of historical grand opera. The second version of the work, reworked for the Opera de Lyon, transforms the spoken dialogues into recitatives to improve the fluidity of the discourse and the nobility of the action. It is this final version of the work that is presented here in world recreation.
