Sumner was a radical, an anti-slavery campaigner, an idealist, a skilled politician, and one of the founders of the Republican party, then very different from what it has become today. This marvellously fluent and comprehensive biography is written by the Professor of History and American Civilisation at Harvard University and a renowned expert in the field. Sumner comes across as both intellectually and politically very astute and influential, as well as being an impassioned idealist and man of principle.
