Claude Lorrain: The Great Draughtsman - Sabine Cotte, translated by Helen Sebba. Published by Pall Mall Press, Hardback (with dust jacket) 1970. First English edition. Originally published in France in 1970, under the title l'Univers de Claude Lorrain. Claude Gellee (1600-1682) otherwise known as Claude Lorrain, had a fascinating career. Born into a very poor family and orphaned at an early age, Claude, nevertheless, rose to become the day's most fashionable landscape painter. Sabine Cotte reveals Claude as a devoted artist of striking individuality, whose handling of space and light inspired Turner. At the time of writing/publication, the author was a curator at the Louvre in Paris. This book contained 54 drawings, mostly in brown wash, from numerous museums. Condition. Book: Good. Some tanning n the end papers back and front; the pages are clean and tightly bound. The boards are a nice light-mid brown with dark red/brown embossed lettering. Dust jacket: Poor. Tearing along the top edge; mostly minor along the back, and a major tear at the top of the front cover.
