This 1966 Czechoslovak film directed by Jiri Menzel is one of the best-known products of the Czechoslovak New Wave. Released in the UK as "Closely Observed Trains", it is a 'coming-of-age' story about a young man working at a train station in German-occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II, and is based on a 1965 novel by Bohumil Hrabal. It was produced by Barrandov Studios and filmed on location in Central Bohemia. Released outside Czechoslovakia during 1967, it won the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 40th Academy Awards in 1968. Jiri Menzel (1938-2020) was a Czech film director, theatre director, actor, and screenwriter, whose films combine a humanistic view of the world with sarcasm and provocative cinematography. Bohumil Hrabal (1914-1997) was a Czech writer considered to be one of the best Czech writers of the 20th century. Our book is in excellent condition, and comes with a very good dust jacket (price-clipped) which shows on the most minimal signs of age - a folded corner of the back flap, and some sunning to the rear cover where a smaller book has perhaps been shelved next to it. The book itself, bound in black cloth with gilt title etc on the spine, is in almost 'as new' condition, and inside, the binding is firm with no loose pages; pages are clean and bright; many B&W photograph illustrations of shots from the film - this is a combined & translated edition, the aim being to give English or American viewers the best idea of what will be seen on screen.
