Coal Is Our Life

Dedicated to the Yorkshire mine worker, this is a unique survey of his world in the 1950's; a world which no longer exists. Coal Is Our Life was written by two social anthropologists and a sociologist who were addressing the questions: What has been the effect of nationalization on the daily life of coal miners? and What are the present day conditions in the terms dominated by the coal mining industry? It is a "comprehensive factual study of daily life and family life as it is at present in industrial Yorkshire." The chapters cover place and people, work, trade unionism, leisure and the family. Although the town surveyed in the book has been given the fictitious name of Ashton it is now known that it was Featherstone in the West Riding. The book is in good condition for its age having some foxing to the end pages and a couple of bent lower corners on the first two pages and one further within the text. The dust jacket also has some foxing on the rear inside flap. The jacket is chipped on all corners with more noticeable, but limited, damage to the rear cover. A fascinating snapshot of a community and way of life which was swept away by the changes of the late Twentieth century.
