Colour, Class and the Victorians: English attitudes to the Negro in the mid-nineteenth century Colour, Class and the Victorians examines the shifting change in English racial attitudes in the mid-nineteenth century. As sympathy for the plight of black people arose from the anti-slavery movement, as did a harsh racism. Professor Lorimer finds that sources of mid-Victorian racism lay not simply in a direct response to the proponents of scientific racism, nor to the overseas needs of empire, but in the changing social and political climate of mid-Victorian England itself. This book is in very good condition, with only some minor wear to the dust jacket. The spine of the dust jacket is somewhat faded and has some small splits. The pages are clean and unmarked.
