Corsairs Of Malta And Barbary

Very good Condition. Some wear on the clear plastic jacket. Few ships that sailed alone in the Mediterranean in the 17th and 18th centuries were safe. Far more dreaded than any hazard of navigation were the activities of the Corsairs, Christian and Moslem privateers, who preyed on the merchant shipping in the cause of profit and religion. The Barbary Corsairs have an established notoriety. They were Moslems who, from their bases in North Africa, made a living by raiding the ships and the coast-line of Christian Europe, selling the ships they captured, and enslaving their prisoners. What very few writers have said, and what this book strikingly reveals, is that the Barbary Corsairs were exactly paralleled by a similar Christian institution. Operating from bases in Malta and Italy were Christian Corsairs who raided the ships and coastline of the Moslem Mediterranean, and they too sold their captives into slavery.
