Sub-titled: "together with some account of the commencement of Yachting in England. . .a paper read before the Members of the Hampshire Archaeological Society at Cowes, by kind permission of the Commodore and Committee of the RYS, October 11th 1916". The author was William Wyndham Portal, baronet (1850-1931), the proprietor of Laverstoke Bank Note Paper Mills; Deputy-Chairman of the South Western Railway; President of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Association of Architects and author of several books on churches and buildings in the south of England; member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. Signed by "Lord Anglesey" (see image 2), 6th Marquess of Anglesey who was the son of Lord Alexander Paget, third son of the second Marquess. He was a soldier and courtier. Includes two monochrome plates with intact tissue guards: a painting of Cowes Castle in 1780 (image 3) and a photograph taken in the year of publication (image 4). This item is the very rare first edition.
