Born in London, Alan Turing was raised in southern England. He graduated at King's College, Cambridge, with a degree in mathematics. During the Second World War, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park. Within weeks of arriving Turing had specified an electromechanical machine called the bombe, which could break Enigma more effectively. Code breakers at Bletchley Park decrypted the messages and passed them to Allied commanders on 6 June 1944 supporting the D-Day invasion.
