David Frost Introduces Trinidad And Tobago
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
This book presents a portrait of the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, which form one country, taken from several contemporaneous view-points, illuminating many aspects of the country's life nearly fifty years ago. Its history, the special character of its people as a whole are described by c R Ottley, the novelist Merle Hodge and Brinsley Samaroo. Revealing everyday life from the inside, the novelist Michael Anthony writes about a village in Trinidad, the poet E M Roach about growing up in Tobago. Taking a more detached view the poet and playwright Derek Walcott tells why he decided to make Port of Spain his home, and Wenda Parkinson does the same for Tobago. Diana Athill gives the tourist-eye view by recalling first impressions. The famous carnival is portrayed by Andrew Carr, who probably knew more about it than any other living man at the time, and the related subjects of the steelbands and calypso are dealt with by Pete Simon and Errol Hill. Cricket is dealt with by C L R James. The country's architecture is described, the state of the arts assessed, and a useful account of the cuisine given.
