The Golem is a novel written by Gustav Meyrink between 1907 and 1914., based on the old Jewish legend of an animated, anthropomorphic being , which is entirely created from inanimate matter, usually clay or mud. The most famous golem narrative involves Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the late 16th-century rabbi of Prague, where this book is set First published in serial form from December 1913 to August 1914 in the periodical Die Weissen Blatter, The Golem was published in book form in 1915 by Kurt Wolff, Leipzig. The Golem was Meyrink's first novel. It sold over 200,000 copies in 1915. A century after its first publication, The Golem endures as a piece of modernist fantasy that deserves to take its place alongside Kafka. Illustrated with 25 drawings by Hugo Steiner-Prag, and with an afterword by Eduard Frank.
