Mit 6 bis 7 cm Flugelspannweite sind die Prachtlibellen unsere grossten heimischen Kleinlibellen. Unverkennbar sind die Mannchen der Gebanderten Prachtlibelle mit ihrer breiten, schwarzblau schillernden Binde in den Flugeln. Die Prachtlibellen leben an langsam fliessenden Bachen und Flussen, die einen sandigen Bodengrund und sonnige Ufer besitzen. Einen Schwerpunkt des Bandes bildet der Flug der Prachtlibellen. Die Aktivitatsverteilung und Energetik stehen dabei im Vordergrund. Ein weiteres Hauptkapitel schildert die Fortpflanzung und die damit verbundenen Verhaltensweisen.
