The author writes that 'Miss Beale left ample materials for the history of her work .. business documents... minutes...letters', which enabled Raikes to write a full life including the Life of the Ladies' College in Cheltenham. The book includes black and white pictures, separated by tissue paper. This is a fine, olive cloth-covered book, with gilt lettering and front cover image, and just noticeably bevelled edges to the boards. There is some shelf wear, bumped corners and marks. Top page edges are gilt; the side and lower edge have been cut and are uneven, with some browning. End pages are noticeably brown, and have a bookseller's (?) label. Binding appears sound, though relaxed. There is some foxing towards back and front;central pages seem clean. Overall in good condition for its age.
