This hardback book is in very good condition. There is some rubbing to the corners of the covers. The book includes a colour reproduction map of the county of Somerset, measuring 75 x 57cm. There is a small patch of the map that has rubbed off approx 4mm. It is edited by Mark McDermott and Sue Berry. Edmund Rack's Survey of Somerset is a landmark volume in the history of books covering the ancient county of Somerset. He received a salary as Secretary of Bath and West Society but needed to find additional income, which seems to have been the impetus for his collaboration with the Reverend John Collinson in preparing the History and Antiquities of the County of Somerset, to which his major contribution was the 'Survey' which he carried out between 1781 and his death early in 1787. Rack recorded a wide variety of information on churches, manors, customs, geology, agriculture, charities, natural history, fairs, trade, poor rates, manufacture, religion, education, architecture and monumental inscriptions, including many features which have not survived into the 21st century. Rack's surviving text in the Bristol Record Office, which covers the great majority of Somerset parishes, is published here in full for the first time.
