Product details Publisher : V & A Publications; First Edition (20 Sept. 2004) Language : English Paperback : 396 pages ISBN-10 : 1851774319 ISBN-13 : 978-1851774319 Whilst arising from the exhibition at the V&A in 2004, this is not strictly a catalogue of the exhibition. It stands quite well alone as a collection of essays on the cultural interactions between western Europe (primarily but not exclusively Britain, Holland and Portugal) and the Indian subcontinent, China and Japan. (There are also essays devoted to the East Indies). The heavy and sumptuously illustrated volume - there is barely not one page of text that does not also have an illustration, and some illustrations are full-page - is split into three parts. the first, titled "Discoveries", has essays devoted to how Europeans and Asians mapped their own and each other's worlds; addresses the issue of exotica; looks at Chinese porcelain in early European collections; and gives an overall view of the trades in spices, textiles and ceramics that took place prior to 1600. Some of these essays are excellent and merit five stars. The second part is titled "Encounters". The essays here relate details of diplomatic and religious encounters between the two cultures; provide cultural histories of Portuguese, Dutch and British settlement and trade; introduce personal encounters between Europeans and their new partners; and the artistic responses that arose therefrom. The third and final part is titled "Exchanges". Here we see the intermeshing of cultural and economic cultures: porcelain, enamels, lacquerwork, furniture, textiles, paintings going west; European art and technology going east. We also view the fantasies that both European and Asian cultures had of each other. The book ends with a chronology, endnotes, a bibliography, and an object list. Whether as a work of real reference, or 'just' as a work of beauty for those with an interest in the synthesis of artistic concepts between east and west, this volume will not fail to impress. The book is also important for highlighting aspects of our own cultural history, how we have interacted with and interpreted each other's world on the road to increasing globalisation.
