The story of how Wilbur and Orville Wright blended their diverse talents to produce the air-plane has been told so often the world believes it to be true. they did invent the the airplane, but as Mr Walsh shows in this first complete biography of the Wrights, the rest of the traditional view is so distorted as to verge on falsehood. Siting original source materials with the skill of a detective, Mr Walsh has created a dramatic step-by-step, moment-by-moment account of the airplane's invention, development and testing. It reveals Wilbur as the true aeronautical genius with Orville very much his junior assistant. But Wilbur died in 1912, less than nine years after the first flight, while Orville lived until 1948, and this, Mr Walsh shows, was why the myths about them arose and flourished.. By controlling the Wright archives, Orville controlled the way history was written. The official biography was authorised by Orville, thirty years after Wilbur's death, depicting the brothers as co-equals. According to Mr Walsh's biography this view must be abandoned.
