This little anthology of love poems is very much 'of its time' - the late Edwardian period, shortly before the outbreak of World War I. A review published in The Nation, in February 1911 reads: '... is an anthology of poetry, the principle of selection being that each poem is in praise of the lady whose name it contains. The plan is a happy one, and the editor, Mr Stephen Langton (pseudonym of Daniel S. O'Connor), has done his work with taste and judgment. (He) has ransacked the whole range of our poetry and has collected a number of gems which gain rather than lose by the fanciful setting in which we find them. There are four poems by Francis Thompson, including his charming lines to Daisy, and among living poets we notice Mrs. Shorter, Mr. Ernest Radford, Dr. Todhunter, Mr Aleister Crowley, Mr. Dobson, the Rev. R. L. Gales, whose "Marie Louise" appeared in our own columns, and Mr. Wilfred Meynell, who is represented by some admirably turned verses on a "tweeny".' Our little book is in good general condition for its age, bound in what was originally cream/light beige cloth with gilt decoration to front and spine. The exterior is, however, quite darkened with age, and the gilt now faded, though still discernible. External wear consists of bumped corners (no frank damage, however), shelf wear to top & tail of spine, and one small patch of damage halfway down the front spine angle. Page tops gilt; top edge trimmed, other edges roughcut. Inside, the illustrated endpapers are both slightly cracked (webbing visible at the front); interestingly, the halftitle page is watermarked 'Holbein' - Holbein paper was a handmade printing paper sold by Spalding & Hodge, 145-7 Drury Lane, London at the end of 19th century . Binding is firm with no loose pages, though there is a slight weakness at the section headed 'Constance'. Pages are bright and clean apart from very occasional small spots of foxing. Brown silk page marker present but detached.
