"For Sceptre and Crown. A Romance of the Present Time." by Gregor Samarow. 2 volumes. Henry S. King and Co. 1875. Volume 1, 312 pp.; volume 2, 424 pp. Hardback. Blue embossed boards, with gilt title and author's name on the spine, and a gilt rebus of the title on the front cover. First edition. Good condition - vol 1 has slight split at edge of spine, both volumes are a little rubbed at extremes but largely presentable and tightly bound. Former owner inscription to both half-titles. 'Gregor Samarow' was the pseudonym adopted by the German diplomat Oskar Meding (1829-1903). This can hardly be called a roman a clef, since the main political actors are all real people (Napoleon III and Otto von Bismarck), and at least some of the events described are also part of the historical record. However it is the type of fiction that we would now describe as 'faction': faction very much avant la lettre in this case. A romantic sub-plot adds spice to what could at times have become the somewhat arid political shenanigans as the action shuttles busily around Europe: Berlin, Paris, St Petersburg . . . though the 'Seven Weeks War' of 1866, which is the central historical event, was undoubtedly important, not least because it led directly to the the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. A rather splendid publication, and very redolent of the Victorian age in which it first appeared.
