For Such as Are of Riper Years - No listed author or publisher; illustrations by Mel Calman. Hardback (illustrated board - no dust jacket) and unpaginated. This book appears to have been for private circulation: it was printed for Allen Lane in Christmas 1965. This seems to have been a gift book for Allen Lane (1902 - 1970) in 1965, as a Christmas presents for his friends. There is a printed note affixed to the front free end paper, saying "This little book comes to you with good wishes for Christmas and the New Year from Allen [signed by hand]." The book takes the form of cartoons about old age, with a relevant saying or other phrase or sentence on each. It is not clear who wrote the words: was it Allen Lane himself, or Mel Calman? Nevertheless it is an amusing little book. Condition: Good. Inside, there is some tanning on the end papers. A newspaper article about the retirement of Allen Lane is affixed to the front paste-down end paper, and the greeting from Allen Lane is facing it, on the front free end paper. the paper is cartridge-style and double folded; all the pages are like that. Externally, the boards are tanned, with a few grubby marks, but not much wear and tear.
