'France Will Live Again' by Samuel Chamberlain. Hastings House, 1946. Hardback, 173 pp. Samuel Chamberlain (1895-1975) was a passionately Francophile American printmaker and photographer. This highly attractive little book contains a wide range of the most exquisite etchings, lithographs, sketches and photographs, all on French topographical and landscape themes, and (presumably) all dating from the 'entre-deux-guerres' period. The work has a particular poignancy in that it was first published in 1940, when the German army invaded France; this edition (the Sixth Printing) dates from 1946. There is a distinct bias towards Normandy, Picardy, Comte de Nice and the Ile-de-France; one might unreasonably have hoped for more images from, for instance, the Pays-Basque, the Bearn, Ariege, Lot-et-Garonne and Aquitaine. But in so slim a volume, the artist could hardly have expected to represent the architectural beauties of every French Departement. The condition is good with some marking and discolouration to the boards and spine and tanning of pages. Clean throughout and tightly bound with no former owner inscriptions.
