Michael Spence was born on a farm in Kenya. When he was 15, his family returned to England where he attended the Michael Hall (Waldorf) School. After graduation he spent two years national service in the army, worked in a London shipping office, served four years with the Kenya Police, and even spent a short spell selling encyclopaedias door to door. He worked seven years as a representative and branch manager of a finance company, when finally, at 36, he was invited by Francis Edmunds to join the small group of people working to develop Emerson College. During this time he also married Roswitha Mann. Their two children went through Michael Hall from class 1 to 12. Michael was closely involved in the development of Emerson College for twenty-seven years, carrying responsibilities in the areas of College finances, administration, and building construction. During this time he observed and applied the threefold nature of social life, based on his study of Rudolf Steiner. He also ran study groups, taught at Emerson College, and lectured widely throughout North America.
