The book presents the military career of the author starting as a midshipman aboard HMS Queen in 1852, transferring to the army as a Cornet in the 13th Light Dragoons in 1855 to finally reaching the rank of Field Marshal in 1903. During his service he participated some of the major 19th century campaigns of the British army: Crimean Campaign 1854-5; Indian Mutiny 1858-60; Ashanti War 1873-4; South African (Boer) War 1878-81; Egyptian Expedition 1882; Sudan Expedition 1884. The light blue cloth full covers appear to be clean and free from damage apart from some fading and wear to the spine. The binding is complete and all pages appear to be clean and free from damage apart from the free end papers that show brown discolouration.
