Our book has been photographed to see. No stated page numbering. Collectable rare 1815 book of ancient maps made up of 33 copper plates of maps - Contents photo attached. Mild foxing but all maps are clear as can be seen from the photo samples shown to judge condition. Previous owner's names are on the front free endpaper in attractive handwriting and scroll dated May 1816 by the first owner William Morely Stubbs and it would appear that the book was passed down the second owner, his son, in 1839, also named William Stubbs. The second owner, whose signature appears in this book, may add value to this book being an eminent history and religious figure of the nineteenth century; there is a great deal of information about him online. William Stubbs Hon FRSE (21 June 1825 - 22 April 1901) was an English historian and Anglican bishop. He was Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford between 1866 and 1884. He was Bishop of Chester from 1884 to 1889 and Bishop of Oxford from 1889 to 1901. From the date we can see that he was the owner of the book at age 14. He was the son of the first owner of the book, a William Morley Stubbs, a solicitor born in a house on the High Street in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. The second owner, William Stubbs was educated at Ripon Grammar School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with an MA in 1848, obtaining a first-class in Literae Humaniores and a third in mathematics. Looking at his graduation date it is likely that he too owned the book at around age 14 in 1815 just like his son.
