(featuring the one-and-only, Ukraine [Odessa]-born virtuoso, Emil Gilels [1916-85], backed by The Cleveland Orchestra [the eponymous city being sited in the upper, mid-western U.S. state of Ohio] conducted by the equally-legendary, George Szell) Ludwig van Beethoven 's (1770-1827) First Piano Concerto in C - as well as being chock-full of rapid scales, double-trills and skips -, is the subject of a mystery alongside its successor, No.2 : WHICH of these two lovely and legendary works was performed, during the German-born master's premiere as a pianist to the Viennese public, on 29 March 1795? It has proved impossible for musicologists to clear up this point ... Side One : Piano Concerto No.1 in C Op.15 :- 1) I Allegro con brio 2) II Largo. Side Two : Piano Concerto No.1 (conclusion) :- 1) III Rondo (Allegro scherzando). Beethoven's "Twelve Variations on a Russian Theme" is a remarkable little piece, if only for the fact that each Variation seems to possess an individual character of its own ... Side Two : 2) Twelve Variations on a Russian Theme (from Wranitzky's "Das Waldmadchen" G.182). Reverse-Sleeve (sample Photo Four) contains : Tracklisting ; Performance & recording-credits (inc. "Mastered at Abbey Road Studios, London") ; Fascinating 1959 essay, by A. Porter, printed in the English-language ; No photographer-credit for that great, full-colour Front-Sleeve still, of Gilels. Matrix-Runout codes :- "1 S1 36027-4 6" / "1 S2 36027-2 5" (typed). Records graded visually to RRPG grades (record/sleeve) VG+/EX.
