Glyndebourne Festival Opera is an annual opera festival held at Glyndebourne, an English country house near Lewes, in East Sussex, England. It began in 1934, and has run every year apart from the years of WWII (1941-45) and 1993, when the theatre was rebuilt (it reopened in 1994). In 1951, the first Programme Book was issued, containing details of all the operas to be performed during the season, information about the performers etc, and (of course) advertisements from appropriate companies. By 1960, these had become quite glossy affairs, and Osbert Lancaster was asked to design a cover for that year's issue. Our four books are in good general condition, with their original covers, which are a little softened at the bottom (chamfered) edge, but otherwise surprisingly unworn. The 1962 issue has suffered a little more than the others, and is partially detached from the cover (see photo). Included with the 1963 issue are some press cuttings relating to the Richard Strauss opera 'Capriccio' - an opera about putting on an opera (rather like Michael Frayn's 'Noises Off').
