This is a delightful tale of imagined events experienced by a young girl, Sylvia, in the lovely garden of her godmother, where she has been sent to recuperate from an illness. It has similarities with Mrs Molesworth's 'The Cuckoo Clock', and is charmingly illustrated by Florence Harrison. Netta Syrett (1865-1943) was an English writer of the late Victorian period whose novels featured New Woman protagonists. Her output was prodigious: 35 novels, 2 plays, 13 collections of short stories, 17 children's books, and 3 'other works'. Florence Susan Harrison (1877-1955) was an Australian illustrator of poetry and children's books in Art Nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite styles. Many of her books were published by Blackie and Son. She illustrated books by Pre-Raphaelite circle poets Christina Rossetti, William Morris and Sir Alfred Tennyson. Our book is in remarkably good condition for its age, and fortunate in retaining its dust jacket, which is also in very nice condition, the brown paper embellished with title etc in black lettering within a double-line border on the front, with coloured illustration pasted on. Black lettering and repeated leaf motif on the spine. The book itself, bound in light green cloth with lettering and pasted illustration matching the jacket, shows almost no external signs of wear or use. Inside, the sewn binding is firm with no loose pages; pages are clean and bright; no sign of foxing. Free endpapers are browned beyond the jacket flaps, and an ink-written gift inscription is on the front fep.
