About the Gut Microbiome Test Small Gut Microbiome Test Small is a gut flora test that analyses 13 different types of bacteria in the gut and 4 common yeast. It is well known that an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria can create gut issues, but so can a lack of good bacteria. Many studies show the connection between imbalances in our gut flora and a number of serious diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Bacteria and other microbes inhabit not only our gut, but many other places in the body. For example, Lactobacillus predominates in the small intestine and in women’s vaginal tract , while Bifidobacteria and Bacteroides is common in our large intestine . By measuring our gut flora, we may notice any imbalances that could indicate (upcoming) health problems and take the necessary steps to prevent any serious illness or discomfort. Who should test their gut flora? This smaller gut test test is suitable for people with milder gut problems, or if you are interested to test your gut flora in order to be able to optimise your health and wellbeing. It is also suitable for those who have suffered from other diseases that can be related to the gut flora, such as depression, autism, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. For people who have more severe gut issues or want to do a more comprehensive test, we can recommend one of our larger gut tests that also measures leaky gut, maldigestion and much more. What bacteria are analysed by the Gut Microbiome Test Small? Gut Microbiome Test Small analyses 13 different bacteria ( both "good and bad" bacteria ): Bifidobacterium - A beneficial bacteria that helps digest, prevents infection and produces vitamins and vital chemicals. Lactobacillus - helps break down food, absorbs nutrients and fight off any organisms that could cause diseases. Clostridium - a type of bacteria that can cause diarrhoea and colitis (an inflammation of the colon). Klebsiella - a bacteria that lives inside the intestines. If it gets into other areas outside the intestines, it can cause respiratory, urinary and wound infections. Escherichia coli (E. coli)- bacteria that normally lives in the intestines. Mostly harmless and important to a healthy intestinal tract. Escherichia coli Biovare - a type of Escherichia coli bacteria. Proteus - a bacteria that predominantly can cause urinary tract infections. Pseudomonas - a germ that can cause infections, mostly seen in hospital patients. It can cause pneumonia. Enterobacter - type of bacteria that can cause various infections to the skin, blood, urinary tract and pneumonia. Mostly found in environments such as hospitals and nursing homes Serratia - type of bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections, wound infections and pneumonia in hospital environments. Hafnia - a type of bacteria that can cause various infections, such as septicaemia and pneumonia. Enterococcus - occurs naturally in the intestines, but outside of this place in the body it can cause inflammation and blood infection. Bacteroides - live in the gut where they provide vitamins and nutrients to the host and other inhabitants of the gut, but can be damaging to the health if they leave this environment. Gut Microbiome Test Small analyses these 4 yeast Candida spp and Candida albicans - normally lives in the gut, but also inside the mouth, throat and vagina, where it doesn’t cause any issues. However, some types of Candida can cause infections (such as rash), the most common one being the Candida albicans , which the test analyses. Candida albicans is only safe in small quantities. Yeast (positive or. negative) like the various types of Candida. Geotrichum candidum - a yeast that can cause rashes, rankles and tingling of the skin. In extreme cases, it can cause respiratory diseases. The test also analyses pH value - the ph value of poo from a healthy person is between 6.1 - 7.9 pH Function of the gut bacteria The majority of scientists are interested in the bacteria inside our guts. Understandably so, since we now know that gut bacteria have many vital functions that are responsible for good health. They feed the cells in our bodies and control inflammation. The gut system is like our immune system: complex and important in maintaining our health. There is a rare possibility that your immune system and the gut bacteria cause diseases, which is why an analysis of your faeces is necessary. That way we can discover what microbes live in your gut and what they are doing. Looking for a more comprehensive test of your gut flora? Gut Microbiome Small : Analyzes 13 distinct bacteria, 4 yeasts, and the pH value of the gut environment. Gut Microbiome Medium : Incorporates all elements of the Small test, with the added evaluation of Akkermansia muciniphila and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Gut Microbiome Large : Builds on the Small test by additionally assessing digestive functions, including pancreatic elastase, bile acids, and digestive residues. It also measures alpha-1 antitrypsin, calprotectin
