Hans Christian Anderson Fairy Tales. 2 Volumes
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Two volume edition of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales published in 1900. In fair/poor condition. Green cloth covered boards with impressed coloured illustration, black titles to front. Cloth is faded and rubbed, especially to spines, although bindings still hold together well. Both volumes have hinges torn at endpapers and free endpaper missing to front. This was a new translation by H L Braekstad, with an Introduction by Edmund Gosse, and dedicated to the then Princess of Wales (soon to become Queen Alexandra). As well as the familiar and well-loved stories of 'The Ugly Duckling', 'The Snow Queen', 'The Little Match Girl', 'The Emperor's New Clothes' etc, the collection also includes many stories which are much less well-known: 'Aunty Toothache', 'Little Claus and Big Claus' and the tragic 'Story of a Mother' amongst them. Each of the 42 tales has several fine black & white illustrations by Hans Tegner, many of them full-page sized. These books are heavy, over 2kgs, so will be sent by courier.
