Cartesian Tensors by Harold Jeffreys. "It is widely felt that equations of mathematical physics are written out in full Cartesian form the structural simplicity of the formulae is often hidden by the mechanical labour of writing out every term explicitly. Attempts have been made to reduce this labour by one form or another of vector algebra; but it has always seemed to me that this method both introduces new difficulties and is insufficiently general.... The use of Tensor notation, with the summation convention, carries out a great simplification of the writing... It should be noted the object of this work is work is to illustrate the use of tensor methods; it does not claim to give complete theory of all the subjects touched..... There is an updated note from the author in January 1952 explaining the reasons for the reprint 1931 despite most of the material being include din other text book over the preceding 20 years. There are nine chapters over 92 pages. Published by the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press. First printed in Great Britain at the University Press, Cambridge. Reprinted by offset-litho by Jarrold & Sons Ltd, Norwich First Published 1931 Reprinted 1952
