Held Fast For England

"G.A. Henty (born 1832, died 1902) spent the last twenty five years of his life writing boys' adventure stories with inspiring titles such as 'Through the Fray', 'In Freedom's Cause' or 'By Conduct and Courage'. Interest in Henty today is to be found in the views that persist through all his writing. He was a British nationalist, an imperialist and a racist whose stereotypes of simple blacks or Indians only waiting for Englishmen to lead them must have effected the behaviour of successive generations who had read his books as boys. This book looks at Henty as a boys' writer - half his stories were set in the nineteenth century of British expansion - and looks at his influence as an advocate of British imperialism. 'Held Fast for England' is a witty, often irreverent, surely definitive, critical biography of one of the great sacred bulls of the Victorian age." The colour of the spine has faded
