Henri Riviere : Paysages Bretons, Etudes De Vagues
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
In French language, three pages of text and 50 plates of the artists work. In a very good condition. Henri Riviere (1864-1951) was a key player in the revival of colour prints in the 1890s. His woodcuts, brought together in two series: The Sea, Wave Studies and Breton Landscapes, constitute the most innovative part of his work. work. A real masterstroke, they are the fruit of experimental research around Japanese-style wood engraving. These fifty plates, which have become the rarest and most sought-after by the artist, offer a poetic and synthetic vision of the coasts of Brittany, around Saint-Briac, Perros-Guirec, Paimpol and Douarnenez. The originality of the framing and the subtlety of the water-diluted colours owe much to the prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige that Riviere collected.
