An Introduction to Asian Cities from Antiquity to Pre-modern Times This volume gives a broad introduction to the origins of cities and civilizations of the continent of Asia. The authors of various articles trace the origin of grid pattern town plan, the city planning in ancient Japan, the urban systems of Chang'an, the ancient capital of T'ang China as well as the Arabian city of al-Madinah and the Islamic city of the Middle Eastern region and the great Mughal cities of Imperial India. There is also an outline of the history of "colonial" cities in the Far East, South-east Asia and South Asia. In short, this book is an effective introduction to the morphology of Asian cities and the urban history of pre-modern Asia. Most of the essays of this volume are the revised versions of papers presented at the 31st International Congress of Human Sciences in Asia and North Africa, held in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan from 31 August - 7 September 1983. The collection of articles in this book gives an Asian perspective of urban history and it is recommended as an essential reference work for all Universities and colleges. Paperback, very good inside with slight shelf wear to outside.
