History of Strood, by Henry Smetham. First Edition, 1899. Dark green illustrated front board with brown and gilt quarter-leather binding. Gilt lettering to spine, including date. Wear to the spine and corners of the boards. Splits (1 and 2 cms) at the top and base of the spine. Pale marks to both boards. See photographs. Some spotting at the edge of the text block. Internally clean and bright, with firm and square binding. Overall in Good Plus condition. Strood is a small town of Roman origin, situated in Kent on the north-west bank of the Medway. Today it forms part of a conurbation with Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham, but at the end of the nineteenth century, when the present book was written, it remained a separate town. The book details the history of Strood from Roman times to the Victorian age, with many engravings and other illustrations. See photographs.
