Robert Southey (1774-1843) was a poet, critic, historian and reviewer. As a young man he attempted to pursue careers in the church, medicine and law before being able to make a living through writing. He was a close friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth and shared their radical social views and living near both in Grasmere in the Lake District. He was appointed poet laureate in 1813 and took the post seriously, writing politically charged poems, as well as the typical odes. The Peninsula War began when the French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807 and lasted until the Napoleon's defeat in 1814. This listing contains early editions of four of the six volume series, very rare as found - the final two volumes were printed later, and therefore were not included in this particular collection. Each volume is in a fair, clean condition for its age, with some foxing and ripping (especially to the spines, pictured). The initial pages of volume one are detached, due to the binding being broken.
