The Princes de Conde were central figures in France during the 16th and 17th centuries, and this 2-volume history is written by a later member of the family, himself an important political figure. Henri Eugene Philippe Louis d'Orleans, Duc d'Aumale (1822-1897) was a leader of the Orleanistes, a political faction in 19th-century France associated with constitutional monarchy. He was born in Paris, the fifth son of King Louis-Philippe I of the French and Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily. He used the title Duc d'Aumale. He retired from public life in 1883. Robert Brown Borthwick (1840-1894) was an Oxford-educated cleric, who published over 50 books in his lifetime, many of them relating to hymns and church matters. He also found time to translate this massive history from French! Our books are handsomely bound in blue cloth with rich gilt decoration to front & spine, with black double-line border to the front covers, and impressed design and border on the backs, title etc in gilt on the spines. All textblock edges gilt, which remains bright except for the tops, which are a little dulled. External condition of both volumes is good, with only minor signs of wear and use - corners a little bumped, edges & spine angles a little rubbed, some shelfwear to top & tail of spines. The spine cover of Volume I is partly torn down the rear angle. Inside, each volume has a frontispiece portrait of a Prince de Conde, both protected by tissue guards which are badly foxed, as are the frontispieces themselves. Ex libris pasted inside both front covers; a prizegiving label pasted to the front fep of Volume I - presented to a Miss J Denham in 1876. The bindings are firm with no loose pages; folding map present in Volume I.
