Holly - Green Alaska An attractive addition to grow in containers or borders! This traditional holly tree variety, Green Alaska, has had its main stem pruned to form an attractive, formal standard shape, making it the perfect choice for growing in containers or mixed borders. It has deep glossy green foliage and clusters of shiny bright red berries, it brings an instant display of stunning colour and structure with interest to the garden. Hollies that are dioecious have separate male flowers on one plant and female on another, but you need both for pollination resulting in berries. The female plants produce berries, but only if they are fertilised by pollen from a male plant. In other words, two separate plants are required in order to produce berries. If the male hollies are too far away from the female hollies, the females cannot produce berries. Make sure that the female holly shrubs are within 200 yards (183m) of a male holly shrub such as Ilex aquifolium ?Golden Queen? or 'Silver Queen' to produce reliable and numerous berries. This variety provides a year-round display of glossy, spiny green foliage. This easy-to-grow, low-maintenance standard tree is resilient and hardy, thriving in most conditions. Ideal for small gardens and patio containers, it will be a knockout addition with two at the front entrance of your house, front gate or garden. In time, this handsome variety forms a narrowly upright, dense evergreen tree that offers useful cover and a valuable source of food for winter birdlife.
