These 5 paperback books, the volumes 1, 2, 3, 5 & 7 of the "Hong Kong Becoming China: The Transition to 1997" series, are in very good condition. In each case, the cover is in very good condition, with just light edge wear, although Education and Society in Hong Kong has a crease across the lower back free corner. Internally all the books are in very good condition - clean, tight and unmarked, apart from some erased pencil prices on the front free endpapers and The Common Law has the first 2 pages miscut while creased. Volume 1: The Hong Kong Basic Law - Blueprint for 'Stability and Prosperity' under Chinese Sovereignty? This book presents the major documents, with commentary on the basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of china, which was drafted as the constitutional blue-print for Hong Kong under Chinese sovereignty for the years 1997 to 2047. In addition to examining the transitional period from a variety of perspectives, the book presents a legal analysis of the PRC's socialist legal system and mentality and considers how some of the principles underlying that system have been inserted into Hong Kong's legal and administrative system. It also examines the conflicts inherent in the drafting process between the awakened desires for a genuinely democratic and autonomous administration, on the one hand, and the PRC's objective in maintaining control of the levers of power. Volume 2: Education and Society in Hong Kong - Toward One Country and Two Systems This is the first book to explore the implications that the return of sovereignty over Hong Kong in 1997, and the accompanying transitional processes, will have for education. The major issues addressed include: the social, historical, and international context; the legitimacy of educational policy and the challenge of bringing up citizens in the PRC; the present and future role of education in social class and gender stratification, the use of Putonghua and English in schools, and, finally, comparisons between education in Hong Kong and the PRC and the potential for future convergence. Volume 3: The Common Law - In Chinese Context This book examines the extent to which Common Law notions have taken root in Hong Kong. The questions which lie behind this study are some of the most significant that can be asked about Hong Kong law today. Do the people of Hong Kong regard the present systems their own? Will they support its continuance after 1997, or will they acquiesce in its dismantling or decay as an alien, imposed legal order? Volume 5: Reluctant Exiles? Migration from Hong Kong and the New Overseas Chinese This work presents an assessment of the migration from Hong Kong that has occurred since the second half of the 1980s. This pronounced outflow of highly educated people (a "brain drain") is having a profound impact on destination areas, as well as on Hong Kong itself. Volume 7: Hong Kong's Reunion with China - Global dimensions The issues surrounding Hong Kong's global position and international links grow increasingly complex by the day as the process of Hong Kong's transformation from a British colony to a Chinese Special Administration Region unfolds. This volume addresses a number of questions relating to this process. How international is Hong Kong? What are its global and international dimensions? How important are these dimensions to its continued success? How will these dimensions change, especially beyond the sphere of economics? Is Hong Kong's internationalization, defined in terms of its willingness to embrace international values and its capacity to maintain its international presence, at risk? These questions are presented as they pertain to the changing situation; relations between mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; the positions of Australia, Canada and the United States on Hong Kong; internalization of international values; Americanization vs. Asianization; linkages to the world through Guangdong; strategies to emigrate overseas, cultural internationalization; media internationalization and universities within the global economy.
