In 2010, Doha Film Institute began a collaboration with Brigitte Lacombe to document the emerging and iconic storytellers of the MENA region in a series titled "I am Film: Work in Progress". There are close to 200 portraits in this series to date. As she continues to capture the faces of this dynamic community, it is with great excitement that we build on our collaboration for the "In Production" series, where she joins DFI behind the scenes to capture our first year of co-productions. This new chapter of our work with Brigitte Lacombe is launched with a film very close to our hearts, Qatar's first major feature film, "Black Gold". The film is a unique and authentic insight into the region and one of the biggest cinematic projects ever undertaken in the Arab world. The dramatic battle scenes were shot on location in Qatar at the spectacular desert dunes of Mesaieed. Brigitte Lacombe was there to capture this historic moment in our country's history as Jean-Jacques Annaud became the first director to capture these amazing landscapes on film. "Black Gold" is a true milestone for Qatar. I am honoured that an artist of Brigitte's calibre has collaborated with us to document its creation. Brigitte Lacombe's "I am Film: Work in Progress" has evolved into something incredibly special. The project began as a conversation about the prolific talent in the MENA region and has blossomed into a unique and comprehensive portrait of filmmakers in the Middle East and beyond. Since the first instalment of the project, Brigitte has broadened her global travels with DFI, developing the collection to comprise almost 200 portraits of some of the most compelling film identities working today. The intimate video portraits conducted by Brigitte's sister and renowned documentarian Marian Lacombe bring a new dimension to the work, allowing us to delve deeper into the subjects. At DFI we strive to inspire, nurture and empower a new generation of storytellers both locally and globally. "I am Film: Work in Progress" is integral to that vision. Contains two bilingual books in Arabic and English containing many high quality black & white photographs of the actors and scenes from the film. The books are contained in high quality slipcases within a presentation case with magnetic closures.
