Unfortunately, the spine is coming away from the front cover, though the binding is sound. Black covers are marked, but gilt title on spine is still striking. 596pp. An early edition of this best-selling book, one of a group of gritty north country novels by left wing women writers that Gollancz specialized in. Phyllis Bentley (1894 - 1977) made her name with this novel which has a background of the textile industry in the West Riding on which she was able to write with authority. She went onto a long and successful career of writing high quality middle brow novels and being a distinguished figure on the Yorkshire literary scene. This copy of an early edition PS19.99
