Italienische Malerei: Alte Pinakothek by Cornelia Syre Text in German. The Bavarian State Painting Collections have one of the most extensive holdings of Italian painting internationally, the main works of which are presented in the Alte Pinakothek. Masterpieces by Giotto, the founder of modern painting, by Fra Angelico, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael as well as by Titian, Tintoretto, Guido Reni and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo offer the viewer a unique panorama of this art from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque. The collection is primarily due to the commitment of the various branches of the House of Wittelsbach, whose art treasures were brought together in Munich between 1799 and 1806. At the beginning of the 19th century, King Ludwig I had a decisive influence on the profile of the collection with his programmatic acquisition policy and his enthusiasm for Italian painting through numerous purchases of early works. Paintings such as Raphael's Madonna Tempi, Sandro Botticelli's Lamentation of Christ or Filippo Lippi's Annunciation of the Virgin Mary are still among the highlights of European art today. In very good condition throughout.
