Jacob And The Raven, Illustrated By Heywood Sumner
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Cloth binding, spine and top edge faded. Vignette on front and spine. Corners bumped, spine worn at top and foot. Binding cracked in several places. Gift inscription dated 1909 on front end paper. Frontispiece, 18 half- and full-page b/w illustrations, and numerous decorations in text by Heywood Sumner. Frances Mary Peard was born into a widely travelled family and her writing refers to folk tales from India and - as here- northern Europe. These stories are in a similar vein to Hans Christian Andersen, but with more stress on the reality of life for impoverished peasant farmers in cold climates. Charles Heywood Sumner was a respected illustrator and designer in the Arts and Crafts movement, producing designs for stained glass windows, woven tapestries (one made up by William Morris & Co.), wall decorations and numerous books. He was committed to Morris' ideals of art in daily life, designing cheap prints for use in schools and hospitals. These illustrations combine Art and Crafts stylisation with observation of daily life, in a graphic style that is legible and forceful. A rare copy of a little-known volume that brings together many of the chief currents of late 19th century children's books, folkloric influences and Arts and Crafts styling.
