From Jazz Desert to Swinging City - 'Jazz Around Chichester' by Bob Crosby takes us from the 60s when live jazz was hard to track down, but there were a few helpful pubs where there were fine musicians playing both trad and modern jazz. The Chichester Festival Theatre led the way in the 60s with a sequence of jazz festivals featuring international artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, and our own Humphrey Lyttleton. In 1991 the Chichester Jazz Club was formed, and grew from its initial four members to 220 at the time of publishing this book. In 2006 the hugely successful 'Jazz in the City' has set the scene for the future. At the same time the local academic world was introducing schemes leading to degrees in jazz studies, as well as residential courses for jazz enthusiasts. Young musicians were encouraged to join school bands, and today jazz can be heard in pubs, clubs, festivals and even around out historic Market Cross. Signed dedication by the author, written in pen on title page. Author Bob Crosby, a lifelong jazz enthusiast, is well known in the South as a lecturer on jazz subjects at university and adult educational establishments.. He also wrote a jazz column and concert reviews for local newspapers, and has had his own weekly music programme on WVBR New York. After retirement he was founder chairman of the Chichester Jazz Club which has had two distinguished local musicians as Vice Presidents - Kenny Baker and Bobby Wellins. In 1999 Bob completed the best selling authorised biography of Kenny Baker.
