This large-sized book explores the life and works of John Clarke Hoyte, focusing on his early landscapes of the New Zealand countryside. Hoyte moved to New Zealand, from the UK, in 1860, with his wife and they lived there for 16 years. The book examines the techniques and styles he used to create his paintings of New Zealand landscapes. The large pages allow the reader to view the paintings pictured in greater detail, and to see the brushwork for themselves. The book is in a very good condition. The cover has some mild creases and markings, and the page edges have begun to discolour. But the binding is strong and the contents appear unaffected. This book would be best suited to those interested in the history of landscape artists.
