His compositions were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Massenet's operas are known for their melodic beauty and for their depiction of the emotions of love and passion. His best-known works include the operas Manon (1884), Werther (1892) and Thais (1894). His music continues to be popular and is regularly performed around the world.
